Conservation
In addition to past experience working on a Grade 1 listed building and a scheduled
ancient monument, a variety of work has been undertaken by Studio Callaghan to
six Grade II listed houses in Central London. Design ranges from external landscaping
to complete refurbishments and conversions.
Listed buildings present an exceptional design challenge to integrate conservation
and restoration detailing with contemporary design and sustainable environmental
requirements. Research on noise impacts on listed buildings has been carried
out and designs have been developed to protect interiors from road and underground
rail noise.
Projects begin with an assessment of the existing buildings and their context
and where necessary a conservation plan is developed. Key elements for offsite
restoration are identified early on and a procedure for their careful removal,
storage, conservation treatment and reinstatement is developed. On site restoration
is preceded by research into the materials, their history and with consultation
with conservation officers. |
